Hi,
With all of Mackinac's complements, I can't
believe I haven't sent a new owner your way. I feel like I could fill an
order pad per day with all the people who are in love with him and who ask
about you.
Today at the school crosswalk, a child yelled, "Hey Mom there's
Mackinac!" I didn't even recognize her -- must be someone we see at the
park. I have to get you photos of the little kids at the park swarming
him -- hugs and squeezes, and begging me to let them walk him. I think
that going down the slide has made him even more of a celebrity than his
good looks and great personality. There is not a mother at the park who
won't let her tiniest child pat him and get a kiss. (Although sometimes
when they are not looking he steals their toys from the sand -- have had
some 3-ft-high tots sternly yelling, "NO" at him over that.)...
Congratulations on the new puppies -- boy, Asco is really in demand!
Oh, and I am not a bit surprised by that woman who roared off, (because we at VW would not breed Asco to her less than adequate bitch) -- I can
tell our vet has never seen a decent GSD before Mackinac. When we wanted
to get one he practically forbade it, based on what he sees of the
"breed." He told us that proper breeding was almost nonexistent in the
U.S. and he was sick over what he saw passing as German Shepherds. The
worst part is the heartache of the people who lose pets in ill-health --
they don't care how they look. You can imagine how thrilled the vet was
when he saw Mackinac. He can't believe we are not going to show or breed
him.
Anyway, I better get back to work. H.

I am quite happy with my little
angel the way she is. Actually, I told Harriet last night after I got home... why I wanted a dog
so much after my other died. I got a little nervous for some reason with
Phillip away and took Kassi upstairs to inspect every room in the house,
even the ones the children were asleep in. She had her nose to the floor
and checked everywhere so I was very confident that no-one was around.
I had to give her a bath tonight after the energetic duo finished playing
(they were both black) so I put her in the bath tub for the first time as
it was too cold outside. She didn't like it too much, however, while I
was e-mailing you she just jumped back in to the downstairs tub so she
couldn't have hated it that much.
By the way, I saw a 5 month old GSD in the park on Tuesday and she was
tiny in comparison to Kassi (who is small in comparison to Mackinac).
Apparently, the dog came from a 'reputable breeder', she paid $1,000 to
this lady and then the dog was ill for a long time. He had toxemia or
something of the sort caught from chickens!! It was a sweet male but all
he seemed interested in doing was (now what's a nice word......) mounting
everything in site. We let the dogs play and she kept saying what a
beauty Kassi was - in fact everyone does. Miss Kassi just kept slamming
that male on his back to show who was boss!! Now I am a TRUE BELIEVER
when you say that you get what you pay for. You were sooooo right.
Hope you are all well,
Tracy

Hi Kim, Harriet, and Tracy! and of course Mack, Kassi, and Mackinac! =)
I
got your e-mails the other day and have finally had a moment to sit down
and write back! Thanks so much for writing. I was really wondering about
some of the other pups from the Asco & Sage litter that mine came from.
...Vom Waldenhaus is great about "customer care" even after the pups
have been sent! Nothing but great things to say for their program. I
really enjoyed hearing about your dogs. It's amazing how great they are!
Let me tell you more about Hero. I've owned two other dogs before him, a
Samoyed and a Dachshund...and by far he is the one that is the most
intelligent and "aware" dog that I've owned! We go
swimming at the various lakes in the area, and even go swimming in calm
parts of the Potomac itself. He also loves the Shenandoah River to the
west of us. I wasn't able to go out to see the puppies to pick one due to
the distance, so I was very carefull about telling Susan what I was
looking for. She helped narrow it down, and sent me a video to pick from.
My fiance and I picked him up at the airport when he came. He was flown into
National Airport. Poor little puppy wasn't even scared of all the hustle
and bustle of the airport and flight and only seemed to want to go to the
bathroom! He must have been in the crate for four hours before we could
pull over to the nearest park to let him out for the first time! He never
went to the bathroom in the crate! SInce then, he has been a wonderful
pet. He LOVES catching blown bubbles out of the air with a passion! He
loves to dig huge holes. He does it on command which is good for the
Search and Rescue work we're getting into. He's never been to the beach,
so I can't wait to see what he can do in the sand! =) Right now he loves
digging the wood chips up that surround the playground equipment! Those
chips go flying all over the place! Then I have to fill in the hole after
of course! His favorite toy is a red ball that glows when it gets jostled
(thrown/shaken). At night time you can really throw it, and see it clear
as day. He can track it easily and retrieve it. He retrieves our tennis
balls when we play tennis. We call him our "Ball Boy" when we play
tennis. He mostly brings the net balls back to us. Occasionally he'll
decide to keep them and eat them! =)
  We have actually already started
training for SAR (Search and Rescue) work. The outfit is a Volunteer
group called Virginia Volunteer K-9 Search and Rescue. I live in Fairfax
Virginia which is the group that went to Turkey. They are specialized in
urban and collapsed structure searches. I work closely in my job with
them. I run a pool at a recreation center owned by the county, and they
always come in to fitness train. My organization runs a water park for
families too. Lazy Rivers, slides, fountains, etc. We gave the 70 people
who went to Turkey family passes for them, their dogs, and their family to
come to the water park for a day exclusive to them for their work over in
Turkey. If Hero and I make the volunteer team, we would only be
supplements to what ever was sent to Turkey. Mostly while they were all
away, if a kid got lost in the woods around here or a building collapses
somewhere, they would call the volunteer team in. Fairfax County is
fortunate to have so many trained dogs on the team that went to Turkey.
But a lot of counties don't have as many dogs. Some only one or two. So
the volunteer teams (which are more staffed) can get called all over. Even
out of state.
Hero is still a pup of course, so his training now consists
of getting to see everything and go everywhere. Yesterdays "field trip"
was to go watch heavy machinery moving about at a construction site. We
actually got close to one bulldozer moving. Hero watched and watched, but
didn't bolt. That way he'll be used to that kind of activity for a
collapsed structure search. We play hide and seek, which he loves! And
that incorporates well into SAR work obviously. We were recently in
Minnesota on vacation and did four "searches" that were more real. The
first two he was amazing at! He followed a scent right up a trail for
approx. 200 yds and then cut right up off the trail to where the victim
(played by my fiances brother was laying down out of sight. It was
amazing to see. The next "search" was more tricky where he went across an
open field, caught a cross scent in the air, and followed it...the wrong
way (downwind) from the hiding victim. But the fact that he could even
recognize the scent, and change his course to "follow it" (even if it was
the wrong direction) is still great for a four month old puppy (at the
time). Now he's 5 months as are yours. He weighs 63 pounds. He's quite
an eater! The last of his baby teeth just fell out, so now he can really
go back to munching! He was slowing down there for a moment! Well, long
enough. Hope I didn't bore you! Let me know how your dogs are doing, and
I'll also send pictures of Hero at some point.
Take care,
David and Hero.

Hello,
It's Ron S. Hope all is well. I've got two major
problems. First, it is nearly impossible to take Leo anywhere that we
encounter people; we are constantly stopped by folks who want to admire
him. We get very little exercise stopping every fifty feet so people can
oh and ah over him. He gets more attention that Robert Redford ever got
on his best day. The second problem involves separation anxiety. I have
always been concerned that Leo might develop this condition because we
have never been apart. My fears about separation anxiety came true with a
vengeance last weekend. I left Leo overnight with my daughter and the
problem became immediately apparent. By the time I returned home, about
an hour and a half, I missed Leo so much I had to call Kelli to check on
Leo. He was doing just fine, I was miserable.
Within the last three weeks his coloration has showed some rapid and
dramatic change. I thought he might resemble Blackjack, though now I'm
not sure. His chest, neck, cheeks and forehead are changing to a tan/red.
I don't think he will have a traditional pattern like Burk, because his
entire top line and flanks remain a deep black, but his head and chest
will probably be a light color. It will be interesting to see how he
ends up.
In addition to mastering all the major obedience commands, Leo has taken
quite a liking to canoes and he proudly carries the morning newspaper the
one-third mile from the newspaper box to the house.
Oh yes, Leo can also swim. One evening, just before dusk, we were on a
floating pier at the lake and Leo became interested in the dark, flat
surface just beyond the the pier's edge. He had never before seen water
and being late evening and rather dark the calm water looked like a firm
surface to him, rather like blacktop. Without hesitation, he stepped
smartly off the pier and disappeared beneath the water's surface. I
suppose he thought he could walk on water, since he's mastered everything
else he's tried. Actually, he had no concept of water, although upon
surfacing he performed a near perfect dog paddle directly to the closest
point of land. He is a riot.
I've mentioned that his favorite joy is chasing bugs, preferably
butterflies or dragon flys. Well now his new pastime is chasing things
that chase butterflies and dragon flies - bats. Never mind that they are
fifteen feet over his head, he runs in circles imagining that somehow they
will fall prey to his serpentine dance. Hasn't happened yet.
What has happened is that he has found his bark and it rattles the
windows. No one dare approach, thought should they catch a glimpse of
him, his happy tail would betray his mock fury.
All this activity wears him out. Like clockwork, at 8:15, he is standing
next to the bedroom door waiting to enter his crate. That's my guy.
Give Sage and Asco a pet for Leo and me.

Hello,
Although you do not hear much from me lately, it is not because we do not
think of you and your family out there in Missouri.. We are just busy, as you
are. However, when special things happen in regard to Hunter I do want to
sit down and share them with you.
Hunter turned one year on Monday..On that particular day my (almost ) 11
year old (his birthday is this Friday) had come home from school as usual. I
was not home yet, because I was on the way to pick up his brother from
elementary school. He decided to check up on the dogs in the backyard
because our one garage door was open. Since he was the first to be home,
this was an unusual situation to greet him. The dogs were fine, so he threw
a stick for Hunter to fetch..Just as Hunter was bringing the stick back,
Taylor started barking at something (yes, this too, was a first)..She ran to
Hunter who turned around towards a man who had just scrambled over our back
fence from our neighbor's yard. This is the same time that my son saw this
stranger. Hunter let out loud barks and ran towards the man. For some odd
reason, the man must not have seen the dogs in the yard (there were some
bushes and trees separating him from the lawn), so he ran back to the fence
and heaved himself across it. Hunter jumped up on the fence(with the front
paws) and barked some more. Once he was back in our neighbor's yard, the
intruder just took off running through the yard and down the street. My son
was rather shaken.
I thank God that Hunter was there and reacted with his ancestors instinct.
I am not sure what Hunter would have done if he had gotten to this intruder
before he cleared the fence ...Although Hunter looks impressive and perhaps
formidable, he is still a babe..
The fact that the garage door was open was probably totally unrelated to the
backyard incident..since the house was totally undisturbed. If one of the
cats decides to run out of the garage as the door is coming down, the
sensor is tripped and the door automatically opens up again. That probably
happened that morning as I left with the boys for school..except I had never
looked back to check that the door had actually closed..
Tonight Craig took Hunter on some quick errands,,In the pet store Hunter
followed Craig's commands to the 'T'..like he was a PRO..Other customers were
asking him what obedience school he had taken Hunter to...Of course Hunter
has only had the puppy class and my continued re-enforcement at home...After
the new year I will definitely enroll him in some intermediate class..I
think Hunter actually gets a kick out of them..
Well, it is getting late ...but I just wanted to thank you for breeding such
a fine dog!!!
Eric (my 11 year old) thanks you too...
Gratefully yours,
Goldy

...I cruised your website - I just love looking at all the dogs. For the
first time I noticed Julie's grey muzzle, just like Dakota. Coltrane's
face has stayed much blacker than his dad's; his eyes are still two
different shades of brown - such a distinctive looking dawg! Also,
Dakota's fur is at least twice as long as Coltrane's. He's a skinhead.
We have an intercom arrangement on the phone with my mother which causes
the phone to ring twice when we call her. Since they don't play with her
rotund little piglet Cassie, the yellow lab, we frequently call her to let
her know that the wolves are heading out. First they learned what two
rings meant. Then if I dialed while on speaker phone, they recognized the
sound of the number I was dialing if I was calling her. They listen to
every number I call; if I dial anyone else they don't move a muscle
because it's not for them. To keep them from going nutso when I call my
mother and am not planning to take them out, I started picking up the
phone to dial - but they watch and know from my dialing on the keypad that
I'm calling her - even before the phone rings twice. The subtleties of
their intelligence are amazing.
Coltrane loves to play with me, and if I let them out but don't go out, he
either comes back in with a toy in his mouth and follows me around with
that look in his eyes, or he sits outside and stares at the house.
I had them in the car today right next to a bank machine. They sat there
and watched me, but starting barking hard when a man stood in line behind
me. I just looked at them and said it was ok, and they quieted right
down. I think if Coltrane had to climb a 10 foot wall (or squeeze himself
through a partially opened car window) to rescue me from some brute, he
would.
Well, I'll let you tend to your broods. I may be biased, but I think that
Egan and Julie create absolutely spectacular puppies.

Well I've had Baron just beginning 4 weeks now and it has been a wonderful
experience. He was basically housebroken when he arrived here and now I
know exactly what you mean by "reading" him. He lets me know when he has
to go. Any accidents have been my fault for not moving fast enough. He
has slept through the night since his arrival. He has grown so much in
the past 3 weeks I can't believe it. He has lots of silver in him now -
not sure where that came from but he is beautiful. And smart!!! He just
started obedience training, learning how to walk on a leash without
pulling in 45 minutes with gentle instruction. He comes when he is
called. Since I plan to go into search and rescue I've been setting him up
to push open doors, climb out of tight spaces, greet all kinds of people,
etc. And he just knows what to do. For all of my fears about raising a
puppy - he's has been wonderful - and I've nothing to fear. He is
comical and mischievous, intelligent and loving. He met my brother's
140lb GSD and it was like they've know each other forever. He showed
nothing but curiosity and ingenious when trying to take a ball out of
Smokey's mouth. First he would chase Smokey, then when that didn't work,
he'd sit and wait for Smokey to come back and he would hit Smokey from the
side to get him to drop the ball. We were amazed. The yard they were in
wasn't fenced in so I had Baron dragging a 15 foot lead. He was being so
good I decided to give it a shot and take it off. Well every time he
started to head off the wrong way I would call him and he would come
running back. His intelligence is absolutely amazing. I can't wait to
start serious training.
You should be very proud that you raise such wonderful dogs. Rest assured
that if I'm ever asked where to get a GSD it will be from you and only
you. As a side note when I went to the vet's office I overhead a comment
regarding Baron....someone said "Now that's what a German Shepherd is
supposed to look like." It made me feel great.
I'll keep you posted on our progress in training. All the pictures I've
taken aren't good enough to send to you yet but as soon as I get a good
one, I'll send it along.
I can't thank you enough for your patience, understanding and for sending
me such a wonderful partner.
Sincerely,
Nancy

Hello,
I have attached a photo of my 4-year-old, Adah, with Saint. He has
really settled in nicely, and behaves well enough to have the run of the
house. It's fun, though, to see his drive kick in. He usually is playful
and laid back, but when it's time to play ball it's like someone throws
a switch. There's a complete personality change as he immediately goes
into a focused state. He won't tire of whatever the game is.
It's been over 10 years since we've had a puppy in the house, but Saint
has been a breeze. After a few nights in the crate next to our bed, we
let him sleep on his own, and he has not had any accidents. We now sleep
with our bedroom door open, and he makes sure he has a view of the
threshold so to "guard" us.
He loves all the neighbors and other visitors, and my wife and daughters
adore him. I'll send more pictures as he grows; he is almost visibly
larger every day.
Best Wishes!
Ed

Dear Susan and Tom,
Hoped you liked the pictures of my little angel... The older
she gets the more I realize just how clever she is. Of course everyone who
meets her is amazed at her outgoing nature. Even so, her protective nature in
our home is comforting. She has filled out well and finally her beast
appetite has diminished. Her obedience training is going well. My mom has
fallen hard for her. Now of course she can't imagine a day without her. I was
very proud of her the other night when I took her out for her last potty break
before bedtime. She is off lead in the yard checking animal scents when I
look up to see a large raccoon scurry across the street towards us, obviously
unaware of our presence. Well one second later Reina is aware of this furball
and prepares her launch. I yell out "No...Stay".(and of course say a tiny
prayer too.) She stands perfectly still, allowing this very tempting morsel
to pass unmolested. So even though she has incredible drive her willingness
to obey and please me takes over......What a cool dog! All right, enough of
"my child is wonderful stories".
Take care.

It has been a long time since we have written. Just thought we would
send an update on Rommell with a couple of pictures.
Rommell is 10 months old now, about 75 pounds and the love of our
hearts. He is so intelligent, so quick to please and so very handsome.
We could not be any more pleased -- and to think we had the last pick of
the litter. We now believe ya'll really and truly never ever produce
what some call the "last pick". Rommell would have been and is now our
fist pick.
We attend obedience class once a week, now into the intermediate
classes, and are doing excellent. We are very pleased with our trainer
who specializes in GSD working dogs and his technique is total praise
and very very little correction. The trainer says that Rommel has great
drives. Rommell is just a pleasure to work with.
Rommell also loves to play games (actually he never wants to stop). We
will play tracking games with him and he loves that! For instance, I
will go through the woods and then later Rommell and Howard will follow
and try to find me. Rommell is an excellent tracker and has absolutely
no problem following my trail. It is just amazing to watch him work.
He's just all we expected and more. Hope you enjoy the pictures, they
really don't do justice to how handsome he really is.
Your friends,
Howard and Mary W.

Hello Susan & Tom,
I wanted to tell you that we ALL had a wonderful time visiting. I knew I
would enjoy myself. But to be honest, I was quite amazed at how "in awe"
my dad & Cindy were. They both confessed after our visit, that they had
previously thought that I was a little crazy for spending that kind of
money for a dog. But the experience not only changed their minds but now
they too want such a dog.
I am getting Sophie with money left to me from my mother. She didn't
leave a fortune by any means and I think my family was a little concerned
about spending it on a dog. But they "get it" now. It's one of those
things you cannot explain but our visit Sunday explained it all!! They
are special dogs and you are special people!
Thank you for spending so much time with us. With Andrea and Lucas away I
know that you have more things to get done. I hope that you are getting
along okay without them around. Audrey and John are going to Arizona to
visit his parents soon. It will be the first time (except for Saturday
night), that I have been away from her. So, I can only imagine how you
must feel. I am dreading it. Everyone keeps telling me to enjoy the
break, I think they are crazy!
We watched the video and Miss Pink or Miss Red (or any of them actually)
will be great. The runt is really going to make a great pet for someone.
Watching him on the tape was a scream! Audrey and John liked Miss Pink &
Miss Red also. Let me know what you observe over the next couple of weeks
(whenever you get a chance). Picking her up in two weeks (instead of
three) works out great because the following weekend is Halloween. Audrey
was dressing up as a lion. Guess what she wants to be now? A "Sophie
puppy". I told her that her lion costume can be modified into one. Oh my!
Take care and thank you so much for everything!!

Hello to all,
Thank you for a great afternoon and for an incredible puppy!! It was so
nice to meet the whole Forrest family. Your GSD's have the life!!
Sophie was asleep belly-up on my lap before we hit the paved road. She
slept most of the way home and through the night. I have to confess,
however, that she bunked with me. We both slept sound. I know this is a
huge no-no but after John gets back she'll never get the opportunity so I
thought what the heck!! She is such an easy baby (except for the fact
that I quickly learned that my house may be toddler-proof, it is not
puppy-proof). But a quick run through eliminated most potential puppy
catastrophes.
She is soooo sweet. Her and I went on a walk this morning and she found
nothing the least bit daunting. A sprinkler system came on and nearly
scared me to death but she was fine. She was very amused by it.
I decided it was time to begin the formal introductions. Especially,
since
Abby howled like a wolf all night wanting to come in to see Sophie. So, I
let all three out in the yard. I sat on the porch and Sophie sat beside
me. After, Abby & Stanley had finished their business they both rushed
towards me (eager for some love) but Sophie didn't see it that way and
leaped in my lap and let out the most ferocious bark/growl. Not a scared
puppy bark/growl but a "I'm not afraid of you stay the heck back"
bark/growl. Abby & Stanley froze and Sophie was not about to back down.
I patted Sophie and told her it was okay and she licked me and everything
was fine. Needless, to say I have decided to proceed a little more slowly
with the introduction. I put a baby gate up in the kitchen that allows
everyone to look but not touch. Sophie is fine with this arrangement.
Oddly, she couldn't care less about the cats. She finds them harmless I
guess.
You know I could go on forever and I don't want to bore you. But let me
thank you from the bottom of my heart for such a wonderful companion. I
have had her less than 24 hours and I can tell she is special. She has
already shown me that she is as sweet as a marshmallow but NO wimp. Her
intelligence is extremely apparent and she is at my feet asleep right now.
I love her!!
Thanks so much!
Kristi

your
time)

I just found out that you have Asco again, and will be breeding him to
Katie. I had been in touch with Debbie about another Asco puppy. I was
looking to get another Birko. If you are going to be breeding him to
Katie, could I possibly put down a deposit on a longhaired male ? Birko
has adjusted very good, and we are ready for another puppy. We have
decided not to do any breeding, just enjoying our companions. If we get a
younger dog, I think we will have no problem with it adjusting to the
horses. Please let me know if this is possible. I have mailed you a photo
of Birko with his two best friends. We had gotten them done for Christmas,
but the photographer didn't get them back to us until just recently. Birko
is picking Maggie up and carrying her around in her blanket again this
year. I swear he started laughing when he saw us get it out this time. He
was so excited ! He just grabbed her up and took off ! He knew right away
what it was ! We are going snow skiing in March, Salt Lake City, and we
are taking him with us. I can't wait to get him in the snow. We have a
cabin we rent, and it has a three acre yard for us to play in. I'm sure
he'll miss Maggie, but I couldn't bear to leave him with anyone, he is so
loyal to our family, and fantastic with the children in the neighborhood.
I swear they know the difference in Children and adults. He won't let any
adults out of their cars when they arrive ! Well , let me know about the
puppies , and when you get the photo.... tell me what you think.
* * *
I'm glad you got the photo of the three some ! That
MAggie, she runs Birko, (or so she thinks !) I have never seen a more
tolerant or patient dog in my life ! He really does love her, and she will
chase him around, to get him to play. When he doesn't want to, he'll be
laying on the sofa with us, and she will come over, and start pulling the
hair out of his tail ! Big wads of it ! We all yell at her to stop, which
she ignores, of course. But he hates it, but it gets him up and playing,
she knows how to get him. But of course, then he'll grab her coat and
carry her around for revenge. They are so funny. We do want a puppy, can
you tell me, has anyone got a deposit on any plush yet, male or female ?
Just curious, we are having family discussions on male or female still !
Let me know, and I will do the credit card thing as soon as I hear from
you.

Hello,
Good to hear from you. Bohdo is doing great. We take him every
week-end to our farm near São Paulo where he can have a lot of
activity. He loves to follow me while I am horse back riding. I
am looking for a female to keep him company. Given the level of
energy he has and the attention he requires, I cannot imagine
having a bunch of puppies and surviving the experience. I wonder
how do you manage. Anyway, I would like to keep open the
possibility of breeding them if sometime in the future I have
the time and the courage. He seems to get along well with other
dogs he meets when I take him for a walk etc. He is not
aggressive but isn't afraid of anybody or anything. I have no
idea, however, how would he react to a new puppy in the house a
few months from now. You can certainly tell it better than I.
What do you think?

Thank you for sending... Blackjack's
papers to me. That's quite a fine line that he comes from. I'm
not surprised based on how gorgeous he looks and wonderful his
personality is. He's 9 months old now as you probably know and
he weighs about 90 lbs. (as of 3 weeks ago.) Looks like we're
shedding now and his long hair on the sides is going away...for
now.
I must tell you, he is a wonderful, playful, patient and
friendly boy. Actually, he is a little bit of a joker like me.
He fears nothing, but he is a gentle giant even with the small,
feisty dogs in obedience class. By the way, he's doing just
fine in class. What an intelligent fella. I could go on but
suffice it to say, he has exceeded my expectations and he's not
even full grown yet!
I'm glad to hear Birko has found a home. If he's anything like
his long - haired brother, those folks are in for a great
addition to the family. I wish I could have had them both!!
They're hunks!!
As soon as Blackjack gets a little older, I will be back for one
more of your babies. Blackjack will be a hard act to follow,
though. I would be looking for another male with a similar
temperament and structure as my best friend here. I'll keep
tuning in to your website to see what's coming. Maybe this fall
or winter.
I promise to send you a picture soon for your files. I hope the
winter wasn't too bad in Missouri.
Best wishes to you and the Family.
Kevin D.

Hi,
They finally made it home. Talk about gorgeous!!!! I
guess all the photos, videos and books do no justice to a magnificent
looking dog, nor do they fully prepare you for the energy that comes with
them. He is absolutely gorgeous. Thank you.
I guess Tom had an adventure himself in the process. (Nothing with the
dog, just trying to get to the dog). I'll let him tell you after he
recuperates. Lack of sleep.
Well Rio looks good, no problems noted, and the stress level and
adjustment are doing good.

Sorry we didn't get back with you sooner, Rio and Tom made it back to King
Salmon on Saturday night. It took him a day or so to get his appetite
back, but he seems fine now. We thought we pretty well puppy proofed the
house, but he's showing us how much we forgot. His idea is if he can
reach it, it's his.
Sunday was interesting, we have two flights of stairs to our bed room. The
night before I had to carry him up, because he wanted nothing to do with
them. I told Chris, I sure hope he learns how to get up them soon ,because
he's so heavy. (35 lbs on the Anchorage scale) Chris worked with him
Sunday morning and he made it up about five steps, before turning around.
We tried to bribe him with bits of kibble, but that didn't work either.
Sunday night I opened a bag of cheese popcorn and he got a piece that fell
on the floor. I took a few pieces and put them at the top of the stairs,
and with a little coaxing he went right up. He's so proud of himself now,
( he just came up to let me know I've been up here to long.)
The first two nights his schedule was messed up, but he still woke us up
to go outside, ( 2:00 & 4:00 A.M. !!!) now he's going to bed at 10;00 P.M.
and getting up at 6;00 A.M. We did have one little accident, but we blame
ourselves for that. He got up from a nap and we decided to play with him
instead of taking him outside, oops. Live and learn.
He didn't care for the leash at first, but he's fine with it now. His
right ear has stood up also. I can't believe how smart he is, he already
sits and lays down when told to. well, most of the time. He also thinks
he's the great protector already, sounding the alarm when anything moves
outside.
We were wondering about something, we have a grapefruit sized orange
rubber ball that he loves. He doesn't just play with it , he really barks
at it too. The only thing we can figure is he likes the hollow sound it
makes. He just acts like he remembers this from somewhere.
I believe he missed you for a couple days, at night he'd whimper a little,
and I'd put my hand on him and he'd go back to sleep. It's funny how long
it takes them to forget.
Well thats about all for now, we'll write again soon. Take care.
Chris & Tom
